Siesta Key Area Activities

Siesta Key Area Activities
Siesta Key, Florida, is not part of the Florida Keys! It's unique. As a matter of fact, it’s located near Sarasota on the western side of the state, and is actually considered a barrier island. The area has three beaches that are all on the Gulf of Mexico, and if you are looking for a place to go that’s away from the hustle and bustle of the typical Florida tourist traps, then Siesta Key is for you.
Try your hand at one of the many water sports on this tropical island with its award winning bright, white sand. Or simply attend one of the many events on the beach, or in the village. World-class volley ball tournaments, craft shows, art exhibitis, and food and wine tastings are just a few of the many scheduled annual events. On Siesta Key, you are on island time, so slow down, unwind, and stroll thru our beautiful tropical village.

The Siesta Public Beach is one of the three beautiful beaches at Siesta Key, and the most popular. The waves are gentle, lapping at the crystal white sand that is 99% pure quartz which stays cool even in the heat of the midday sun. Siesta Key Beach has received numerous awards for the finest, whitest sand, and many people enjoy simply walking the beach and enjoying the sunset. This beach also offers visitors tennis and volleyball courts, playgrounds and picnic area, gazebos, and concession stands. There are beach wheelchairs available for anyone who needs them and there are plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance.

The Siesta Public Beach is the host of the Siesta Key Sunday drum circle. This is not a Native American drum circle; instead it’s a group of people who play drums or other percussion instruments enjoying the rhythms they make in the warm evening sun. It usually starts about an hour before sunset with a handful of people and ends up with a large group. Dancers, jugglers, and street performers join in the fun, and there is at least one ceremonial fire lit during the event. It’s worth joining in just for the experience.

If you enjoy bird watching, then Siesta Key is a great place to catch some of the local birds that inhabit the area. There are plenty of birds other than just the standard seagulls. There are lots of wading birds to see, including the Great Egrets that grow to a height of three and a half feet and eat fish, frogs, insects, and even small mammals. They are used to the population and seem to ignore most people who cross their path. There are also fun little sandpipers to watch as they look for tasty morsels on the beach and wild parrots in all of our tropical, beachfront trees. These parrots nest in groups of twenty or more, so you’ll know where they are when they decide to get a bit chatty.

For the people who enjoy the nightlife, you are going to want to check out Gilligan’s Tropical Bar located in the Village. This bar has a great atmosphere where beach attire is acceptable at the minimum and collared shirts and shorts for the men at the maximum. It has a great Tiki atmosphere and if you happen to be staying in the Village, you’ll never have to worry about getting a ticket for driving drunk. Enjoy a Pina Colada while sitting at this outside bar and soaking up the warm night air.
